ABSTRACT Nitrogen fertilization, besides increasing productivity, can favor the production of well-formed, large, and heavy grains, which are traits valued by the oat processing industry. However, high nitrogen (N) doses may lead to plant lodging, which could be solved by using growth retardant. This study aimed to evaluate the industrial quality of white oat grains cultivated under different nitrogen doses and associated with the growth retardant trinexapac-ethyl in two growing environments. Experiments were conducted in Londrina and Mauá da Serra, PR, Brazil, using the cultivar IPR Afrodite in a randomized block design in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme and four replications. Treatments consisted of four topdressing N doses (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg ha−1) and the application or not of growth retardant. Thousand-grain weight, hectoliter weight, grain index greater than two millimeters, peeling index, and industrial grain yield were evaluated. The effect of N fertilization and growth retardant on the industrial quality of white oat grains depends on the characteristics of the growing environment. The trinexapac-ethyl application reduces grain quality in Londrina and Mauá da Serra. However, the industrial quality of grains is high in both growing environments when the growth retardant is associated with nitrogen doses.

ABSTRACT The application of an adequate rate and splitting of nitrogen is essential for wheat grain yield and protein content. The aim of this work was to adjust nitrogen management approaches regarding agronomic performance and protein content of wheat cultivars in various environments. Field experiments were conducted under no-tillage system on soybean mulch during the 2011 and 2012 growing seasons in Londrina and Pato Branco regions. The experimental design was a randomized block in split plot with four replicates. Four wheat cultivars (IPR Catuara TM, BRS Gaivota, Quartzo, CD 120) were tested with six nitrogen (N) management forms. Were evaluated: number of ears per unit area (NEA); plant height (PH); thousand-kernel weight (TKW); test weight (TW); grain yield (GY); and protein content (PC). The combined ANOVA (p ? 0.01) and Tukey’s test (p ? 0.01) were used. The interaction between cultivars and environments influence all yield components, GY and PC. The interaction management forms of N and environments affected the TKW, NEA, GY and PC. The results showed that in low-rainfall environments, nitrogen topdressing could be suppressed with no negative effects on GY or PC. Under ideal weather conditions, the GY of wheat cultivars was enhanced on application of 60 kg.ha–1 N of urea at the beginning of tillering as well 20 kg.ha–1 of N at booting. Matching the appropriate cultivars to the ideal growth environment is essential for achieving high GY values. The nitrogen forms on the topdressing do not influence the PC of cultivars in Pato Branco.

Resumo: Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de aveia branca cultivada sob diferentes doses de nitrogênio em cobertura, associadas ao redutor de crescimento trinexapac-ethyl em dois ambientes de cultivo. Os experimentos, em Londrina-PR e Mauá da Serra-PR, foram conduzidos utilizando-se a cultivar IPR Afrodite, em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4 x 2, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos constaram de quatro doses de nitrogênio (0, 30, 60 e 90 kg.ha-1) associadas ou não ao redutor de crescimento. Foram avaliados: produtividade de sementes, massa de mil sementes, geminação, primeira contagem de germinação, comprimento e massa seca de plântulas, envelhecimento acelerado, condutividade elétrica, índice de velocidade de emergência e emergência de plântulas em areia. Os dados foram submetidos a análise de variância e, posteriormente, ao teste F e a regressão até 2° grau (p≤0.05). A aplicação do redutor de crescimento e da adubação nitrogenada de cobertura aumenta a produtividade de sementes em Mauá da Serra. A adubação nitrogenada reduz a qualidade das sementes, contudo este efeito pode ser minimizado, não observado ou sobreposto pelo efeito positivo do redutor de crescimento. Este efeito depende das características do ambiente e não foi observado em Londrina.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of white oat seeds cultivated under different topdressing N levels combined with the plant growth retardant trinexapac-ethyl in two growing environments. The experiments were carried out in Londrina and Mauá da Serra Municipalities (PR, Brazil) with the cultivar ‘IPR Afrodite’. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 4x2 factorial arrangement, with four replications. Treatments consisted of four N levels (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg.ha-1) combined or not with the plant growth retardant. Seed yield, 1000-seed weight, germination, first germination count, seedling length, seedling dry matter, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, emergence speed index, and seedling emergence in sand were evaluated. Data were submitted to the analysis of variance and then to the F test and regression analysis up to the second degree (p≤0.05). The application of the plant growth retardant and N topdressing led to an increase in seed productivity in Mauá da Serra. N fertilization reduced seed quality, but this effect can be minimized, not observed or overlapped by the positive effect of the plant growth retardant. Such an effect depends on environmental characteristics and it was not observed in Londrina.

Abstract IPR Aimoré is a new triticale cultivar that combines earliness and high yield. In Value for Cultivation and Use trials carried out in 33 environments, involving the main triticale producing states, IPR Aimoré surpassed 4% the controls means, with mean yield of 4.955 kg ha-1.

Abstract The oat cultivar IPR Afrodite, resulting from a cross between CFT 2 and the inbred line ER 88144-1, is high-yielding, has grain quality traits that are relevant for food processing and industry, and is resistant to the root-knot nematode species Meloidogyne incognita, M. javanica, M. paranaensis and M. enterolobii.

The wheat cultivar IPR Catuara TM, obtained from a cross between the line LD 975 and the cultivar IPR 85, exhibits high gluten strength, which will allow the milling industry to supplement flours from wheats with weaker gluten strength, resulting in better quality products for the final consumer.

Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho produtivo de genótipos de trigo com diferentes qualidades industriais em resposta às proporções de parcelamento da adubação nitrogenada em cobertura. Foram avaliados seis genótipos de trigo, sendo estes: IPR 136 e LD 052114 (melhorador), IPR 130 e IPR 144 (pão) e BRS Louro e CD 105 (básico). A adubação nitrogenada em cobertura foi realizada na dose fixa de 80 kg ha-1 na forma de ureia, com cinco formas de parcelamento como segue: P1- dose total aplicada no perfilhamento aos 20 DAE (dias após a emergência); P2 - ¼ no emborrachamento e o restante aos 20 DAE; P3 - ½ aos 20 DAE + ½ no emborrachamento; P4 - ¼ aos 20 DAE e o restante no emborrachamento e P5 - dose total de N aplicada no emborrachamento. As proporções de parcelamento da adubação nitrogenada em cobertura não afetaram o ciclo, o grau de acamamento, o peso hectolítrico (PH), a massa de 1.000 grãos, o número de espiguetas por espiga, o número de grãos por espigueta, o número de grãos por espiga, a massa de grãos por espiga e o nº de espiga/m². Os genótipos IPR 136 e LD 052114 apresentaram maiores rendimentos de grãos quando o N foi aplicado em uma única vez em P1 e P5, respectivamente. Para os genótipos BRS Louro, IPR 130 e CD 105 as diferentes épocas de adubação nitrogenada não afetaram a produtividade de grãos. Na cultivar IPR 144, a adubação nitrogenada em cobertura dos tratamentos P1, P2 e P5 favoreceu a produtividade de grãos.

This study aimed to evaluate the performance of wheat genotypes of different industrial qualities in response to the ratios of nitrogen (N) fertilisation topdressing. Six genotypes of wheat were evaluated, those being: IPR LD 136 and 052 114 (breeder), IPR 130 and IPR 144 (bread) and BRS Louro and CD 105 (basic). The nitrogen fertilisation topdressing was applied at a fixed dosage of 80 kg ha-1 as urea, divided five ways: P1 - the total dosage being applied when tilling, at 20 DAE (days after emergence); P2 - ¼ when booting and the remainder at 20 DAE; P3 - ½ at 20 DAE + ½ at booting; P4 - ¼ at 20 DAE and the remainder at booting; P5 - total N dosage applied at booting. The proportions for splitting the nitrogen fertilisation topdressing did not affect the cycle, the degree of bedding, the weight per hectolitre (HW), the 1000 grain mass, the number of spikelets per spike, the number of grains per spikelet, the number of grains per spike, the grain mass per spike and the number of spikes/m². The genotypes IPR 136 and 052 114 LD had higher grain yields when N was applied as a single application in P1 and P5 respectively. For the genotypes BRS Louro, IPR 130 and CD 105, the different nitrogen fertilization times did not affect grain yield. In cultivar IPR 144, the nitrogen fertilization topdressing in treatments P1, P2 and P5 favoured grain yield.

O programa de melhoramento de plantas no IAPAR iniciou-se em 1972, logo após sua fundação, e tem como objetivo principal o desenvolvimento de cultivares superiores, com alto potencial de rendimento, resistência genética aos principais fatores bióticos e abióticos adversos e boa qualidade nutricional e tecnológica. Ao longo desses quarenta anos o IAPAR tem disponibilizado para os agricultores 184 cultivares de diferentes espécies, resultando em aumento de produtividade, maior disponibilidade de alimentos, redução dos impactos ambientais, agregação de valor para as propriedades agrícolas e melhoria de vida dos agricultores e consumidores. A instituição cumpre assim com sua missão de gerar tecnologia contribuindo para o desenvolvimento da agropecuária paranaense e nacional, uma vez que muitas das cultivares desenvolvidas são utilizadas em diferentes regiões produtoras do país.

The plant breeding program at IAPAR started in 1972, soon after its foundation, and has as main objective the development of superior cultivars with high yield potential, genetic resistance to major biotic and abiotic adverse factors and good nutritional and technological quality. Over these forty years, IAPAR has made available to farmers 184 cultivars of different species, resulting in an increase in the productivity, greater availability of food, decrease in environmental impacts, addition of value to agricultural properties and life improvement of farmers and consumers. Thus, the institution fulfills its mission of generating technology, contributing to the development of agriculture in Paraná and in other parts of Brazil, since many of the cultivars developed are used in different regions of the country.

O objetivo do trabalho foi identificar genótipos de trigo, provenientes do Programa de Melhoramento Genético do IAPAR, promissores para cruzamentos, por meio de técnicas multivariadas. As medidas de dissimilaridade entre os genótipos foram obtidas a partir de variáveis multicategóricas. Para identificação dos agrupamentos foi utilizado o método de otimização de Tocher e o hierárquico UPGMA. Os genótipos avaliados foram alocados em cinco grupos divergentes, indicando que a base genética do programa de melhoramento de trigo do IAPAR é ampla. Com base na distância genética, cruzamentos artificiais envolvendo as cultivares IPR 85 e IPR 118 podem ser os mais promissores no intuito de incrementar o ganho genético, tanto para a qualidade de grãos e de farinha quanto para parâmetros agronômicos.

The objective of this study was to identify promising wheat genotypes from the IAPAR breeding program for crosses by multivariate techniques. Measures of dissimilarity between genotypes were obtained from multicategoric variables. To identify clusters, Tocher optimization and UPGMA were used. The genotypes were divided into five diverging groups, indicating a wide genetic base of the wheat breeding program of the Agricultural Research Institute of Paraná (IAPAR). As indicated by the genetic distance, crosses involving the cultivars IPR 85 and IPR 118 seem to be the most promising to increase genetic gains in both grain and flour quality as well as for agronomic parameters.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a possibilidade de obtenção de linhas recombinantes homozigotas de trigo mais resistentes à germinação pré-colheita independentemente dos genes de cor, em três populações brasileiras de grãos vermelhos. Os resultados mostraram significância estatística entre linhas, em todas as populações, distribuição normal e segregação transgressiva. A distribuição normal apresentada por todas as populações com grãos vermelhos sugere que a germinação pré-colheita, excluindo-se os genes responsáveis pela pigmentação dos grãos, é, provavelmente, controlada por muitos genes. Os resultados indicam, também, que é possível aumentar a resistência à germinação pré-colheita, independentemente dos genes de cor.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the possibility of obtaining recombinant inbred wheat lines more resistant to preharvest sprouting, independently of colour genes, in three red-grained Brazilian wheat populations. The results showed statistical significance among lines within all populations, which presented a normal distribution and transgressive segregation for preharvest sprouting. The normal distribution of the lines from all red-grained populations suggests that sprouting, excluding the genes expressing seed coat pigmentation, is, probably, controlled by many genes. These findings also indicate that it may be possible to improve resistance to preharvest sprouting, independently of the colour genes.

Dez cultivares de trigo foram submetidos à saturações de alumínio (SATAL) de 0, 15, 30 e 45%, para avaliar a tolerância desses materiais à toxidez de alumínio. O experimento foi conduzido em Londrina, PR, em 1994, usando microparcelas, com material de solo de um Latossolo Roxo álico (Haplorthox típico), com 65% de saturação de alumínio, corrigido com calcário dolomítico, para se obter as saturações acima mencionadas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso com distribuição em parcelas subdivididas. As diferenças entre cultivares de trigo foram caracterizadas pela produção de grãos (PGT) e os componentes de rendimento: número de espigas m-2 (NEM), número de grãos espiga-1 (NGE) e massa de mil grãos (MMG). Observou-se diferença na produção de grãos e nos componentes de rendimento entre os cultivares testados. Aumento na SATAL diminuiu a PGT, o NEM e o NGE; não se observou alteração na MMG. Os cultivares de trigo reagiram diferentemente em relação à toxidez de alumínio. 'Anahuac' e 'IAPAR 29' foram os materiais mais sensíveis. Os cultivares 'OCEPAR 16', 'Trigo BR 18' e 'Trigo BR 23' foram considerados moderadamente sensíveis, enquanto o 'IAPAR 6', 'IAPAR 53' e 'IAPAR 60' apresentaram-se como moderadamente tolerantes ao alumínio. O 'IAC 5-Maringá' e o 'Trigo BR 35' foram caracterizadas como cultivares tolerantes à presença de alumínio tóxico no solo.

Ten wheat (Triticum aestivum) genotypes were evaluated in microplots with aluminum saturation of 0, 15, 30 and 45%, during 1994, in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The soil was a Distrofic Red Latosol (Typic Haplorthox), with 65% saturation of aluminum, amended with dolomitic lime. Variables evaluated included grain yield and yield components: ears.m-2, grains.ear-1 and the weight of 1000 grains. Genotypes differed in yield and yield components. Increasing aluminum saturation decreased yield, ears.m-2 and grains.ear-1, but did not alter thousand kernel weight. The genotypes reacted differently in relation to the toxic soil aluminum. Anahuac and IAPAR 29 were aluminum sensitive; OCEPAR 16, Trigo BR 18, and Trigo BR 23 were moderately sensitive; IAPAR 6, IAPAR 53, and IAPAR 60 were moderately tolerant; while IAC 5-Maringá and Trigo BR 35 were tolerant.

O objetivo do trabalho foi combinar seleção simultânea para produtividade e qualidade tecnológica em populações segregantes elite de trigo, desenvolvidas pelo programa de melhoramento genético do IAPAR. Treze populações foram escolhidas, de acordo com a potencialidade de variabilidade genética na geração F2. Procedeu-se a seleção de espigas individuais as quais foram semeadas no sistema de espigas por fileira. Na geração F3 realizou-se a seleção individual de linhas, para potencial produtivo. Características como número de dias para o espigamento e peso de parcela foram determinadas. Sementes das linhas selecionadas, foram avaliadas para qualidade tecnológica por meio da análise de Sedimentação e teor de Proteína. As populações foram denominadas de C1 a C13, representando os diferentes cruzamentos. O número de linhagens selecionadas dentro de cada população variou de um a doze. As populações C6, C7, C9 e C13 foram classificadas como de maturação precoce. Duas populações (C6 e C9) apresentaram maior potencial de produtividade de grãos. Quatro populações C12, C3, C8 e C1 destacaram-se para a média e variância de sedimentação. As populações C2, C3 e C11 destacaram-se para teores médio, máximo e também variância de proteína. Os resultados obtidos indicam condições favoráveis de obter-se linhagens com elevado rendimento de grãos associados com melhor qualidade tecnológica.

The objective of the work was to combine simultaneous selection for grain yield and technological quality in elite segregating populations of wheat developed by the breeding program of IAPAR. Thirteen populations were chosen according to their potentiality of genetic variability in the F2 generation of the 1997 crop season. One hundred heads were selected from each population and sown as F3 head-rows in the following season. Visual selection of individual head-rows or lines was done for yield potential and maturity. Seeds of the selected lines were evaluated for Sedimentation Values as well as Protein Content. The populations were identified as C1 to C13, representing the different crosses. The number of F2:3 lines selected within populations varied from one to 12. The populations C6, C7, C9, and C13 were classified as early maturity. Two populations (C6 and C9) presented higher potential for grain yield. The populations C12, C3, C8, and C1 were better for mean and variance of sedimentation values. The populations C2, C3 and C11 had a good performance for mean, maximum values and variance of protein content. The data indicates a good potential to obtain advanced lines with higher grain yield associated with a better technological quality.
